Secrets To Networking Like A Pro

When you met your spouse, did you just say, "Marry me"?
Or when you started dating, did you simply grab the person’s hand and take them out?
Sounds strange, right?
But there’s an important lesson here.
I’ll explain in a moment, but first, let’s talk about something crucial for tech professionals which is networking.
Many people, especially young professionals, believe that tech is for lone wolves and that introverts thrive best in the industry.
This mindset is damaging, it reduces job opportunities and often leads to prolonged job hunting.
Beyond mastering technical and soft skills (which I discussed last week), building strong people skills is essential for career success.
Some see networking as difficult or one-sided.
Just like the example of marriage and relationship I mentioned earlier, networking should be natural.
Just like how you won your lover’s heart.
The key is to Keep it real and professional.
You never know, the person you connect with today could open doors to your next dream job.
And that’s the beauty of networking: access to hidden, unadvertised opportunities.
Now, there are five definite ways to network like a pro without forcing it and make the relationship professional:
- Build your online presence
It’s important to build your personal brand around your business.
The social media is not just there for posting pictures and talking with loved ones.
It’s also for networking.
As a professional, the most important social media is Linkedin.
It’s where you pull attention towards your career as you publicly talk about what you do, how you do it and how much you love it.
It’s the place where you can reach out to HRs and also have professionals reach out to you building great relationships.
2.Be confident
When reaching out, silence the voice behind your head limiting your abilities
It’s all a lie.
These people are humans like you and theworst they could do is not reply.
Build confidence and have a positive mind when networking
- Have a networking pitch:
I call this a “pitch” because when you network.
You sell yourself to people you outreach to.
State your name, what you do (and the problems you solve) and how you do it.
Here’s an example:
Hi, I’m Mavins Bird, a cybersecurity engineer committed to protecting businesses from cyber threats.
I specialize in identifying vulnerabilities, implementing robust security frameworks, and ensuring compliance with industry standards to keep sensitive data safe helping organizations mitigate risks and stay ahead of evolving cyber threats.
You can also say this in DMs and in a physical event.
Practise this, it becomes natural.
- Be proactive
Networking doesn’t happen by accident.
It’s an intentional thing.
Be intentional about reaching out to people in your field.
Attend physical tech events. Join tech groups. DM people.
Have a Business Card that clearly state what you do and give it to people you meet.
- Don’t be deperate:
Desperation kills.
Nobody cares about you but they care about themselves.
You need to give out value first and not talk about how don’t have work.
Find ways to add to the person's life and see how wonders take it charge, changing your life.
The last thing I want you to know is be patient.
Don’t push it too hard.
Especially if someone doesn’t reply your DM or email immediately.
Instead of typing a thousand words when they don’t reply immediately.
Just follow up after a few days of sending the DMs.
